Prime Minister Modi and UAE President Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan introduced the UPI RuPay card service in Abu Dhabi on February 13.
This will facilitate seamless cross-border transactions between the two countries. This follows the MoU on interlinking payment and messaging systems signed in July last year during the PM’s visit to Abu Dhabi.
India launched its UPI system in Sri Lanka and Mauritius on February 12. PM Modi is on a two-day trip to the UAE. He was welcomed by President Nahyan. The PM was given a guard of honour on his arrival in the country. He was later accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Qasr Al Watan, the Presidential Palace. The leaders will then hold meetings to take forward the bilateral strategic partnership.
This is the Prime Minister’s seventh visit to the UAE since 2015.
During his meeting with the UAE President, PM Narendra Modi said, “I thank you for the warm welcome. Whenever I come here to meet you, I always feel I have come to meet my family. We’ve met 5 times in the last 7 months, it’s very rare and reflects our close relationship.”
He also said he will address the members of the Indian community from all the Emirates of the UAE at a special event in Abu Dhabi.
“Brother, it is also a matter of happiness that today we are (signing) the bilateral investment treaty… I believe that this will be big news for the G20 countries that India and UAE are moving forward in this important direction…” said PM Modi while interacting with the UAE President.
Boosting cooperation in areas of energy, ports, fintech, digital infrastructure, railways and investment flows is set to be the focus of talks between the two leaders. The two sides are likely to sign several agreements to shore up cooperation in several key areas. The two sides are likely to sign several agreements to shore up cooperation in several key areas.
In Abu Dhabi, the PM will also inaugurate the Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) Mandir, the first Hindu stone temple in Abu Dhabi, on February 14.
“I will also inaugurate the first Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi. The BAPS temple will be an enduring tribute to the values of harmony, peace and tolerance, which both India and the UAE share,” the prime minister said. “I will also inaugurate the first Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi.
