Doctors remove 4 cm-long cockroach from man’s lungs

Doda, 29 Feb 2024: In a shocking incident, doctors in Kerala removed a 4-cm-long cockroach from the lungs of a patient who had trouble breathing. As per Asianet Newsable report, the medical procedure took place on February 22 at Amritha Hospital in Kochi.
The 55-year-old man had severe breathing difficulties following which he sought a medical examination. Headed by Dr Tinku Joseph, the Interventional Pulmonology team performed the procedure on the patient. Reports also stated that the cockroach began to ‘disintegrate’ which might have aggravated the patient’s respiratory health.
It took the team of doctors eight hours to successfully remove the cockroach from the patient’s lungs and surgery turned out to be complicated due to the patient’s pre-existing respiratory health issue. Revealing how the cockroach got inside the patient’s lungs, The People’s Network report said the insect entered through a breathing tube that was inserted through the patient’s neck for his previous medical treatment. Dr Joseph informed that the patient had recovered completely and was discharged from the hospital.
In a similar incident, Delhi doctors removed 39 coins and 37 magnets from a 26-year-old man’s intestine after he complained of repeated vomiting and abdominal pain for over 20 days. The surgery was performed at Sri Ganga Ram hospital in the national capital. As per reports, the man swallowed the coins and magnets to increase zinc in his body—assuming it would help in body-building.
In December last year, doctors in Taiwan removed over 300 stones from a woman’s kidney. A report in the Independent stated that the woman used to consume only sweetened drinks to hydrate herself and not water.
